When considering the breathability of paint, it's essential to examine how effectively air and water vapor can pass through the painted surface.

This feature is crucial for preventing moisture from becoming trapped underneath the paint, a condition that could lead to various problems such as bubbling or peeling over time.

When it comes to protecting your foundation, using a non-breathable product can lead to structural damage if not addressed.

Therefore, taking this factor into account when choosing paint will help ensure long-lasting results without any complications down the line.

Waterproofing paints or coatings may seem like the ideal solution for preventing moisture from entering your home, but they can sometimes do more harm than good.

When applied to foundations, these waterproofing solutions are not foolproof. Over time, foundations can shift, and even tiny cracks can form. These cracks may allow water to seep in, often going unnoticed by homeowners.

While these products are specifically designed to keep out unwanted moisture, they also have a downside. They do not allow materials like bricks or concrete to breathe. As a result, moisture can become trapped within walls or other areas where dampness is present. This trapped moisture can lead to further damage, affecting both the structural integrity of the building and the overall quality of the living space inside homes.

Therefore, it's essential not to rely on waterproofing paints or coatings when dealing with issues related to excessive indoor humidity. It's important to use a paint or coating that allows brick or concrete to breathe.

The use of breathable paint is often considered necessary for older homes for several reasons, many of which are tied to the unique construction methods and materials commonly found in older structures

The trapped moisture in walls can lead to a variety of structural problems, including rotting wood, crumbling plaster, and efflorescence (salt deposits) on masonry. When painting breathable coatings help maintain the structural integrity of older homes by allowing moisture to evaporate.

Older homes are more likely to have issues with dampness and poor ventilation. Breathable materials can help mitigate the growth of mold and mildew by allowing moisture to escape, thereby improving indoor air quality.

Many older homes have unique architectural features that can be damaged by trapped moisture. Breathable coatings help preserve these features by preventing the warping, cracking, and discoloration often caused by moisture damage.
