Painting over brick is virtually a death sentence since it loses its natural capacity to breathe and discharge any stored moisture. As a result, any moisture trapped inside the wall will begin to erode the brick, gradually wearing it down. In its natural state, brick is a porous element that absorbs moisture while simultaneously being particularly good at releasing or drying out moisture.
This “breathability” is achieved through the brick’s fissures and microscopic openings. Because all those tiny cracks and gaps have been painted over and sealed up, your painted brick loses its capacity to release moisture and dry out. The level of deterioration is substantially higher in colder areas due to trapped moisture under the painted brick.

What Is SurGuard® Acrylic Paint?
SurGuard® is an acrylic, heavy build, breathable and water-repellent exterior masonry coating.
Its unique chemical composition of inert inorganic pigments and fibres makes SurGuard® weather immune, durable and unaffected by temperature fluctuations. It is also an affordable exterior coating.
What Can We Paint?
This is a versatile protective coating that is used on a wide range of surfaces such as brick walls, stucco, house foundations, fascias, soffits, retaining walls, concrete beams, metal siding, and even the undersides of balconies and canopies.
It can be applied over old paint to refresh the surface.
